Burr walnut kidney-shaped writing desk in the style of a rare and valuable piece by Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1840. The antiqued gilt-tooled leather top is banded in kingwood and surmounts a kneehole drawer, flanked by banks of five graduated drawers with hinged, locking inlaid pilasters. The back is divided with an open bookshelf section and the whole piece is raised on a shaped moulded plinth. A truly magnificent example of early Victorian-style furniture, difficult to make and exhibiting the finest skills of cabinetry and veneering.
